Johnny’s Theme, the signature music of the Johnny Carson show, was composed and arranged by saxophonist and arranger Paul Anka. Anka wrote the original song in 1965, after he was invited to dinner with Carson and his wife Joanne, who were his neighbors at the time.

Carson was impressed with Anka’s songwriting skills and asked him to create a signature musical introduction for the show. Anka was not familiar with Carson’s work, but he eventually accepted and wrote the song titled “Johnny’s Theme” in 10 hours with no prior knowledge of the hosting style of Johnny Carson.

Anka described the piece as “a typical American song.” He said that “it speaks about America and about being American, about the American Dream and about being on the air." He used the melody of the song “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” to create the melody of Johnny’s Theme.

The piece was recorded and recorded just in time for Carson’s first show on Octoberl 1st, 1962. In the show’s heyday, “Johnny’s Theme” became widely associated with Carson and his show.
