Brian Maxwell was a British backpacker and entrepreneur who changed the food industry forever with the invention of the PowerBar. His legacy of innovation, passion, and commitment to providing quality nutrition lives on in products still enjoyed by millions of health-conscious consumers across the globe.
Raised in Scotland, Maxwell studied biochemistry and biophysics at King’s College London, graduating in 1983. Following his graduation, he completed a degree in nutrition science and cognitive psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and began to gain an appreciation for the importance of good nutrition. On one particular backpacking trip, Maxwell realized how hard it was to find nutritious choices in convenience stores and realized the need for food bars that provided essential energy and nutrients for athletes in motion. With his experiences in nutrition and biochemistry, he then went on to develop the first PowerBar.
The PowerBar soon changed the landscape of sports nutrition and the convenience food industry with its combination of high-energy and quality nutrition, suitable for a wide range of athletes. Maxwell’s company, responsible for introducing the PowerBar in 1986, eventually became the world’s largest provider of nutrition bars. However, he was adamant about keeping the quality of the product up and his power bars remain among the most well-established nutrition bars on the market.
Unfortunately, Brian Maxwell died in 2004 due to complications related to diabetes. He was 45 years old. In the years since his death, former associates and well-wishers have celebrated his life and achievements, and the PowerBar remains a staple of convenience nutrition. Today, Maxwell is remembered by millions of athletes and health-conscious customers who depend on his invention for a nutritious and energy-packed experience.
