Most people consider the winter season to be the coldest time of year. The temperatures drop drastically, so much so that local schools often close for days due to the cold weather or snow. But how cold is it actually?
It really depends on your location. Those living in the northern part of the United States often have a much colder winter season than those living in the south. But no matter where you are, temperatures can drop significantly during winter months.
The coldest temperature ever recorded in North America was -81° F in Snag, Yukon, Canada. This temperature was recorded on February 3, 1947. In the United States, the coldest temperature was -80° F in Prospect Creek, Alaska on January 23, 1971.
In some parts of the world, much colder temperatures are possible. In Antarctica, for example, the coldest temperature ever recorded was -112.2° F, found in 1983. In Eastern Siberia, temperatures of -90° F were recorded in 1933.
It’s important to remember that cold temperatures require a certain set of conditions, such as clear sky and no wind, to be possibly set. In other words, the lowest temperatures happen in an environment with no atmospheric interference. With any amount of wind or cloud cover, temperatures are much higher than that.
In general, the coldest temperatures are recorded right before dawn or during a clear night.
