On March 31, 1993, martial artist and actor Brandon Lee tragically died in an on-set accident while filming the supernatural-thriller movie The Crow. Although details are still unclear, it appears that Lee died in a shooting incident as a result of a gun being accidentally loaded with a live round.
Prior to filming, the crew had reportedly prepared an innocent-looking revolver that was to be used in the scene. As part of the scene, the gun was to be loaded with blanks and fired at Brandon Lee. Blanks are completely different than live rounds and are made of paper or plastic with no gunpowder or primer. They only produce a loud noise and not any kind of projectile.
Unfortunately, the gun had not been properly inspected prior to use and the gun was mistakenly loaded with a "dummy round" that had the primer of a live round. This means that when the gun was fired, the primer activated and that alone is enough to propel the bullet out of the barrel and fatally injure Brandon Lee.
The result was a tragedy that could have been avoided if the gun had been properly inspected and the dummy round had been found and removed.
After his untimely death, Brandon Lee was honored with a posthumous Blockbuster Entertainment Awards and Golden Globe nomination, in addition to a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is survived by his father, the martial artist and actor Bruce Lee and his mother, the actress Linda Lee Cadwell.
