Throughout the classic action movie “Top Gun”, the fighter pilots engage in daring aerial warfare and demonstrate incredible feats of skill and courage. While these fighter pilots battle in the air, the story also follows one of their ground crewmen, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, whose friendship with the pilot Maverick forms the core of the movie.
This friendship is brought to a tragic end, however, when Goose is killed in a spectacular plane crash. The crash occurs when Maverick decides to perform a dangerous maneuver involving barrel rolls, in order to get a better look at a mysterious fighter plane. Unfortunately, this maneuver proves too dangerous for Goose’s aircraft and he ejects, only to be killed when his parachute catches fire due to being too close to the plane engines.
The death of Goose is one of the most memorable moments of the movie, and a testament to the dangers of air combat. Despite this accident demonstrating that sometimes bad things happen in the heat of battle, Goose’s friends in the Top Gun fighter squadron still commemorate what their friend meant to them by pouring their drinks into the ocean on the anniversary of his death.
