Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, of an overdose of prescription drugs. Jackson’s death was determined to be a homicide, with the drug propofol being the primary contributing factor. Jackson was administered the drug while asleep at his home in Los Angeles and died over an hour later.
On August 28, 2009, an individual associated with Jackson’s death was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Jackson’s personal physician, Conrad Murray, was found guilty of administering the powerful anesthetic propofol at high doses and illegally supplying other drugs to Jackson.
Propofol, a surgical anesthetic, is not supposed to be used outside of a medical setting and can be extremely dangerous. An autopsy report found high levels of the drug in Jackson’s body, as well as other sedatives and an anti-anxiety drug.
At the time of his death, Jackson was said to have been deeply troubled by financial pressures, a potential criminal trial, and the demands of a comeback tour. According to the LA Times, investigators found evidence that he had been taking various combinations of prescription drugs, something he reportedly did when under stress or in preparation for performances.
The investigation into Jackson’s death has now been closed, with a case-closure report citing the coroner’s findings of homicide due to propofol intoxication as the cause of death. Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to four years in prison, was released in October 2013 after serving two years.
