Theodore ‘Ted’ Bundy, one of America’s most notorious serial killers, was convicted of the rape and murder of at least 30 women during the 1970s. He was eventually executed by electric chair in 1989.
The journey to Bundy’s death sentence began in Florida, where he had been arrested for the murders of two college-age women in January 1978. He was ultimately convicted of these and twelve other murders in two separate trials.
Bundy’s legal team filed numerous appeals and delays in order to prevent him from being put to death. However, in the end, the Supreme Court of the United States and the Governor of Florida both denied all appeals. On January 24, 1989, approximately 11 years after his arrest, Bundy was taken to the electric chair at Florida State Prison.
After being strapped in, a black hood was put over his head, and he gave a brief final statement. Then, at 7:16 a.m., two jolts of electricity were sent through his body. A physician declared him dead at 7:17 a.m.
In the aftermath of his death, Bundy’s victims were remembered and the public found some degree of closure. While Ted Bundy gained infamy for his senseless crimes, his death is a reminder that justice will always prevail and evil will always be punished.
