Monkeypox is a rare and potentially fatal viral disease that is found primarily in parts of West and Central Africa. It is related to the virus that causes smallpox, but it is much less contagious and less severe. Monkeypox was first reported in humans in 1958 after it had been discovered in laboratory monkeys. The disease is rare but outbreaks do occur from time to time in the human population.
The primary way people get monkeypox is through contact with infected wildlife such as monkeys, Gambian rat, squirrels, and other small mammals. It is spread by direct contact with an infected animal or through contact with items contaminated by an infected animal, such as bedding, clothing, toys, and food. It can also be spread indirectly, such as through the air after an infected animal becomes ill and begins to sneeze or cough.
Infected individuals can also spread monkeypox to other individuals. This is accomplished through close contact, by touching infectious material from an infected person, such as skin lesions or bodily fluids, or by breathing in the virus particles in the air.
There is a vaccine available to protect against monkeypox. It is recommended for individuals who live in or travel to areas where the disease may be found, as well as laboratory workers who may come in contact with infected animals. The vaccine also offers some protection against smallpox.
Fortunately, monkeypox is not as deadly as smallpox. Most people who contract the virus will recover, but some may experience serious complications. It is important to remain aware of the risks and take preventative measures against exposure.
