The word for yellow in Spanish is "amarillo".
Amarillo is derived from the Latin word "amarellus", meaning "the color of ripe lemons or pale yellow". Some other words in Spanish which mean "yellow" include "dorado" (literally golden), "mostaza" (mustard), and "limón" (lemon).
In the native language spoken by the Incas of South America, Quechua, the word for yellow is "sarawasi". Quechua is still spoken today and is one of the official languages of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
In Mexico and some other Central American countries, yellow is also referred to as "turquesa" which also means turquoise.
In other parts of Central and South America, yellow can also be referred to as "anaranjado" or "naranja" (orange).
It is common for languages to borrow words from other languages that describe colors. For example, in French, the word for yellow is "jaune" which is derived from the Latin word "galbinus" which is believed to be a cognate of the English word "yellow". In German, the word is "gelb".
