Superman is one of the most iconic superheroes in the world, and one of his defining abilities is the ability to soar through the skies at unbelievably high speeds. Technically speaking, just how fast does the Man of Steel fly?
Let’s start by looking at his most impressive record. In DC comic’s "Action Comics #775" (2001) Superman broke the speed of light, traveling a massive 380,000 kilometers (or 236,000 miles) in one second. This is obviously impossible in our own world, but in the world of comic books, that’s considered incredibly fast!
However, other moments have shown his flight speed to be more modest. To take another example from the same comic book issue, Superman was shown to fly from the Moon and back to Earth in only seven seconds, a feat that would have taken him roughly 20 seconds if he was limited to the speed of light. This is still incredibly fast, but it’s nothing compared to his record-breaking power.
Even outside of his extreme feats of speed, Superman is capable of flying at extremely high velocities. He is capable of reaching speeds of Mach 10, meaning he could theoretically travel from New York City to Los Angeles in under four minutes. Of course, that’s assuming he doesn’t get distracted by any incoming threats along the way!
So to answer the question, just how fast can Superman fly? It depends on the moment and the situation. He has demonstrated the power to break the speed of light, but he is usually limited to just under Mach 10 in most situations. Either way, it goes without saying that Superman is the fastest flier in the DC universe.
