Cooking rice is an incredibly simple process that even beginners can master in minutes. It’s an essential ingredient in many meals that can be served on its own or as part of a recipe. But no matter how many times you’ve cooked it before, it’s always important to follow a few basic steps to ensure that your rice is cooked properly and comes out as perfectly delicious each time.
The amount of time it takes to cook rice varies depending on the type and quantity you’re using. In general, white rices (like long grain, Jasmine, and basmati) require about 12-18 minutes to cook. For brown rices, expect up to 25 minutes of cooking time.
When cooking white rice, start by rinsing the grains in cold water, which will help to lightly remove some of the starch that can make the cooked rice gummy. Drain the water, then add two parts of water (or broth, if you’re making a stir-fry) to one part of rice in a pot. Bring it to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. When it reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and allow the rice to continue cooking for 12-18 minutes. Don’t remove the lid while cooking.
For brown rice, the process is the same but it requires a slightly longer cooking time. Start by adding two and a half parts of water or broth to one part of rice, bringing it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Allow the rice to cook for about 25 minutes or until all liquid is absorbed.
No matter what kind of rice you’re making, once it’s done cooking, turn off the heat, leave the lid in place, and allow the rice to steam for at least five minutes before serving. This will ensure your cooked rice is fluffy and perfectly cooked.
With these simple steps, you’ll be able to cook rice perfectly every time, no matter the type and quantity you’re using. Now, all you have to do is get creative with how you serve it up! Enjoy.
