The Coronavirus Pandemic has impacted millions of Americans in various ways, from lost jobs and reduced wages to business closures and an increase in the demand for food assistance. As a result, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, better known as food stamps), which provides assistance to people struggling to put food on the table, has seen an explosion in usage since the onset of the pandemic. In the past year, approximately 44 million people have received food stamps, an increase of 41% from 2019.
While the increase in food stamps could provide a sense of security for those in need, it’s unclear how long the program will remain available. The continued effects of the pandemic remain to be seen, and the extra $15 billion allocated to the program could run out. In addition, the benefits may decrease as restrictions on businesses are reduced and more people are able to return to work.
Fortunately, some states have enacted measures to extend benefits, ensuring that their citizens don’t fall victim to the unpredictable effects of the pandemic. However, the government may not be able to provide assistance forever, as the program is not designed to be a long-term solution.
One of the best ways to ensure that people don’t have to rely on food stamps long-term is to focus on job creation. This will help those who are currently out of work get back to work, and also allows people to gain the skills and knowledge needed to advance their careers and increase their earning potential. Providing job training and career pathways can be beneficial not just for those in need of food assistance, but for the entire economy.
The increase in food stamps has given people in need the help they need to get by during these uncertain times. Still, it’s important to recognize that the program was not designed to be a long-term solution, and that the continuous effects of the pandemic may limit how long it can remain in place. Job creation and training are key to ensuring that people don’t have to rely on food stamps for the long-term, and that they can get back on their feet and progress in their careers.
