A dollar is made up of 100 cents, and there are 10 dimes in a dollar. That means that it takes 10 dimes to equal a dollar, or that one dime is worth 10 cents.
At its simplest level, you can think of a dime as one tenth of a dollar. This means that if a product costs 99 cents, you can pay with 10 dimes. If it’s something that costs a dollar and a penny, you’ll need 11 dimes to make the purchase.
Dimes are not the only coins the U.S. Mint produces that can be used to represent one tenth of a dollar. For example, a nickel is also worth 5 cents, or half of a dime. This means that 20 nickels are also worth one dollar. You can also use a penny to make a dollar, but it will take 100 pennies to do so.
So if you need to make a purchase that requires a dollar in U.S. currency, you can use 10 dimes, 20 nickels, or 100 pennies to make your purchase.
