The Fast and Furious film franchise is an internationally renowned action film series created by Universal Pictures. It is composed of nine feature-length films, one short film and two spin-off films. The franchise also includes various car-oriented video games.
The first installment of the franchise was The Fast and the Furious, which was released in 2001. The film centers on undercover cop Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and street racer Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) as they attempt to take down a drug lord. Following its success, Universal released two sequels, 2 Fast 2 Furious and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, both of which follow the original characters.
A fourth installment, Fast & Furious, was released in 2009, followed by Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Fast & Furious 7 was released in 2015 and Fast 8 followed in 2017, making the seventh installment the highest-grossing movie in the franchise so far. Fast & Furious 9 will be released in 2020, and the tenth and concluding installment, Fast & Furious 10, is set for release in April 2021.
In addition, there is a two-hour short film titled Los Bandoleros, as well as two spin-off movies, The Fate of the Furious and Hobbs & Shaw. The Fate of the Furious was released in 2017, and stars Diesel, Walker, and Dwayne Johnson as their characters from the main franchise. It was followed by Hobbs & Shaw in 2019, starring Johnson and Jason Statham as their characters from The Fate of the Furious.
In total, there are nine feature-length films, one short film, and two spinoffs in the Fast and Furious franchise, making it one of the most successful film franchises of all time.
