A statute mile or a land mile is a unit of measurement equal to 5,280 feet. This means that one mile is equal to approximately 8,867.1 meters, since one meter is equal to 3.281 feet.
The US customary unit of length, the survey mile (or international mile), is based on the international yard and pound agreement of 1959 which defined a yard as equal to 0.9144 meters. By this agreement, a survey mile is equal to 1,609.344 meters or 5,280 feet.
The origin of the mile can be traced as far back as the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, milestones along the roads were marked one mile apart. The Roman mile is thought to be derived from a Celtic word meaning “one thousand paces”.
Today, the mile is still the primary unit of measurement for distances between cities. It is also sometimes used to measure distances in sports such as running and swimming, as well as for measuring distances in the air for navigation purposes.
The exact definition of a mile can vary from place to place, depending on local standards. In the British Imperial System, a mile is equal to 1,760 yards or five eighths of a kilometer. In the International System of Units (or SI for short), a mile is equal to 1,609.344 meters.
