Water is essential for life, and it is important to drink plenty of it every day. However, how much is the right amount? The daily recommendation of water intake for the average adult is 8-12 cups or 64-96 ounces. This equates to approximately 2-3 liters of water per day.
It is recommended that for every hour of exercise, you should add another cup (8 ounces) of water to your daily intake. If you are located in a warm, arid climate or having an active lifestyle, you may need more water daily to compensate for sweat loss. Also, increased water consumption is recommended during episodes of fever, vomiting and diarrhea, as it helps to prevent water-loss and dehydration.
The amount of water each individual needs varies depending on body size, climate, physical activity, medical condition and age, among other factors. Because the body uses a lot of water during digestion, it’s best to drink most of your fluids throughout the day, instead of drinking all of it at once. It’s also important to choose the right kind of fluids. Besides plain water, other healthful beverages, such as herbal teas, vegetable and fruit juices, low-fat milk and even caffeinated beverages (in moderation) can also contribute to your daily hydration.
In summation, the recommended daily intake of water is 2-3 liters, however you may need more or less depending on a variety of factors. Drinking fluids throughout the day, instead of all at once, is ideal. Plain water is best, but other healthful beverages can also contribute to your daily hydration.
