The National Football League (NFL) is the premier professional football league in the United States. It is made up of 32 teams split into two conferences, the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL season typically runs from September until February and culminates with the Super Bowl, the biggest single-day sporting event in the United States.
Since the founding of the NFL in 1920, there have been a variety of teams joining and leaving the league. Today, there are 32 teams that make up the NFL split equally between the NFC and AFC. The teams range from original franchises such as the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers that were established in 1921, to more recent teams such as the Jacksonville Jaguars, who joined the league in 1995.
The NFL is divided into eight divisions, four in each conference. Each of these divisions has four teams, meaning there are a total of 32 teams in the league. These 32 teams are split into two conferences, the NFC and AFC, with 17 teams in the NFC and 15 teams in the AFC.
A variety of factors, including stadium size, market potential, and ownership group help shape the composition of the NFL. For example, the NFL may prefer to have teams located in major metropolitan areas with a large population base or located in cities that are home to multiple sports franchises. This helps the NFL create a large fan base, which translates into more ticket and merchandise sales and ultimately a larger profit.
In 2020, seven new teams — the Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans — joined the NFL. These seven new teams are in addition to the other 25 teams already playing in the NFL who are listed below:
National Football Conference (NFC):
Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins
American Football Conference (AFC):
Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans.
From its inception in 1920 with 11 teams, the NFL has grown substantially to now include 32 teams. This expansion has helped make American football the most popular professional sport in the United States. The NHL, with 31 teams, is the only professional football league that is larger than the NFL.
