Should You Drink
Water is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, yet many of us don’t drink enough of it.How many ounces of water should you drink per day to stay healthy?
According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, an adequate daily fluid intake is:
•about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men
•about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women
These recommendations cover fluids from water, other beverages and food. About 20 percent of our daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the other 80 percent from drinks.
Although the exact amount of water needed for each individual varies based on various factors, including age, activity level, climate and overall health, it is generally recommended to drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water, which adds up to 64 ounces (2 quarts or 1.9 liters) of water a day. This recommendation is sometimes called "8×8" rule.
Having good hydration can help improve your overall health, give you more energy, improve your mood and even help you focus better. It is important also to replenish electrolytes lost through activity, to prevent dehydration. Sports drinks do contain electrolytes, but they are high in sugar and have other additives. Therefore, it is often recommended to drink electrolyte-fortified water instead to get the balance of electrolytes your body needs.
Water is the body’s primary source of hydration, so the more water you can incorporate into your day, the better. So make sure that you are getting those 8×8 glasses of water a day to keep your body healthy!
