On December 7th, 1941, one of the most horrific days in history occurred. The Pearl Harbor attack by Japan shocked and changed the world in a very short amount of time. During the morning of that day, 353 Japanese fighter planes, bombers, and torpedo planes attacked the US Naval fleet located at the Pearl Harbor Naval base in Hawaii.
The attack lasted over 2 hours, between 08:00 and 10:30 a.m. In total, 2,390 American servicemen were killed that day, more than 1,000 wounded and 21 ships were either sunk or damaged. In addition, over 100 aircraft were destroyed. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a huge blow to the US and brought the country into the Second World War.
Since then, Pearl Harbor has become a symbol of remembering those who lost their lives and honoring their memory. The National Park Service operates the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center which educates visitors about the events that happened that fateful day and serves as a memorial. Every year, on December 7th, thousands of people from all over the world gather to remember those who lost their lives in the attack.
No matter how much time passes or how much knowledge is gathered about the attack on Pearl Harbor, the amount of lives lost will always remain tragic and the memories of that day will never be forgotten.
