World War II is one of the most devastating wars in history, with an estimated 70 to 85 million people killed throughout its course.
In Europe alone, military and civilian losses during World War II are estimated at over 38 million people. Of that death toll, an estimated 20 million were members of the armed forces and 18 million were civilians.
Additionally, 8 million non-combatants died in Germany due to Allied bombing. The Soviet Union also suffered an estimated 20 million military and civilian deaths, while Japan’s losses totaled around 2.7 million. Poland had some of the highest numbers of people killed in World War II, with an estimated 6 million people died in Poland during the war.
Overall, estimates for the total deaths for World War II range from 50 to 80 million people, with some experts believing the true figure is closer to 80 million. This makes it the deadliest conflict in human history.
