Speak Spanish
According to the United States Census in 2017, an estimated 60 million people in the United States speak Spanish. This makes Spanish the second most-spoken language in the United States after English, with more than 40 million native Spanish speakers and another 20 million who are bilingual. Spanish is the predominant language among many Latino and Hispanic communities throughout the country.
In some states, like California, Texas, Florida, and New Mexico, the percentage of Spanish speakers is higher than the national average, estimated at around 30%. The largest shared language in the country, Spanish is also the primary language of many people in the Pacific Islands, Puerto Rico, and other parts of the Caribbean.
As of 2019, the Latino population in the US has grown to nearly 60 million people, making it the largest ethnic and racial minority group in the country. This population also has the highest growth rate, having increased by 66% between 2000 and 2019. As a result, the number of Spanish speakers in the US is expected to increase in the coming years.
In addition to Spanish, the US is a country of multiple languages. The 2020 US Census includes 13 languages —English and Spanish, plus German, French, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, Hindi, and Portuguese. Almost 20% of Americans speak a language other than English at home.
