Football is a game that requires two teams of eleven players each. The teams compete to score points, by moving a ball down the field and into the opponent’s end zone. One of the more popular ways to score points in football is by throwing a pass into the end zone for a touchdown, or by kicking the ball between the goal posts for a field goal.
Each scoring opportunity is marked by the beginning and ending of a period of play, called a ‘quarter’. A quarter is 15 minutes long, and each team is allowed three time-outs per quarter. At the end of regulation time, each team has played four quarters.
In overtime periods, the first team to score wins, which means that only one quarter needs to be played. If neither team is able to score in the four quarters, the game ends in a tie.
Quarters are a very important part of football, as they provide the structure for the game and the teams’ strategies. Coaches need to know when to call a timeout, when to run the clock out, and when to move the ball downfield in order to score points. Quarters are also used in other sports, such as basketball, to distinguish different periods of play.
