Downton Abbey may not be the show that first comes to mind when you think of a long-running series, but it managed to keep an audience of millions engaged for six seasons. From 2010-2015, the show aired on ITV in the UK and PBS in the US and told the story of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the fictional Yorkshire estate of Downton Abbey. Despite its long run, Downton Abbey kept its viewers on the edge of their seats for the entire series with compelling storylines, intriguing plot twists, and intimate character studies.
The show premiered in the UK on September 26, 2010, to critical acclaim and huge ratings. Written by Julian Fellowes and created by Carnival Films and Television, Downton Abbey was immediately a hit, and the show’s first season garnered both Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Awards. The subsequent five seasons of the show continued to be a massive success and earned a combined total of more than 15 Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards. Counting the Christmas Special, which served as the finale, the show spanned six seasons, wrapping up the show’s grand finale with a shocking twist.
Since its conclusion, Downton Abbey has spawned a successful movie released in 2019 and several books based on the show, including a popular series of novels that explore the title belowstairs.
