You may have heard people say “It will be six months from now” when discussing a distant event or deadline. But have you ever stopped to think about how many weeks are in six months?
The answer is twenty-six. That’s right; there are 26 weeks in six months, half a year. Each month has an average of four and a third weeks, which may surprise some people.
So, why exactly are there 26 weeks in six months?
Well, to begin with, the months we use in our calendar are based on the moon’s orbit around the earth and are roughly 30 days long. However, there are an additional four or five days each year, depending on your calendar. These extra days create a discrepancy between calendar months and actual weeks.
To make up for this, many calendars have leap years. A leap year has an extra day added in February, thereby keeping the calendar in line with the moon’s orbit. Without this extra day, we would quickly be out of sync.
In essence, then, the weeks in six months are based on an approximation of the moon’s orbit and the imperfections of our calendar system. Despite the mathematical complexities behind it, it’s easy enough to remember that there are 26 weeks in six months.
So, the next time someone tells you that something is six months away, you can tell them that it’s 26 weeks away. A little knowledge goes a long way!
