Nine months, or 39 weeks, is often used to represent the average duration of a pregnancy. This is because it is the common measurement used to calculate the approximate due date for a pregnant woman during prenatal care.

Most calendars take the year to be 365 days and the month to be 30 days. When converting from months to weeks, the average year length is taken to be 52 weeks, meaning that a month is about 4.3 weeks. That being said, nine months would be just shy of 39 weeks—make it 38.6, to be precise.

The timeframe for a healthy, full-term pregnancy differs for every woman and almost every pregnancy. From the day of conception to birth, a woman’s pregnancy can range from 37 weeks to 42 weeks with the average being 40 weeks.

Typically, labor begins on its own within the 37th-42nd week of pregnancy. Therefore a full-term pregnancy is similar to nine months when measured in weeks, however, it is not considered a full-term pregnancy until the 38th-42nd week. After the 42nd week has passed, a pregnancy is considered overdue and the doctor may recommend that the labor be induced.

Although nine months is often used to indicate the duration of a typical pregnancy, the exact length of a pregnancy may vary greatly depending on factors such as the age of the mother, the health of mother and baby, the number of pregnancies, and the prenatal care.
