A shirt’s weight depends on its size, fabric, and style. The average weight of a men’s shirt for sizes small to extra-large is about 5 ounces. Women’s shirts vary in weight depending upon size and style, but sizes small to extra-large range from 3.5 to 6 ounces, according to research from different clothing manufacturers.
The types of fabrics a shirt is made from also contribute to its weight. Natural fabrics such as cotton weigh in at anywhere from 2.5 to 5 ounces for men’s shirts and 1.5 to 3.5 ounces for women’s shirts, according to the Fabric Link Council. Polyester fabrics are slightly heavier, ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 ounces for men’s shirts and 2 to 4 ounces for women’s shirts.
Tailored dress shirts, which are typically made with a finer fabric and more tailored cuts, weigh more than standard, relaxed fit shirts. Men’s dress shirts typically weigh 7 to 8 ounces while women’s dress shirts range from 5 to 6.5 ounces. These respectively compare to 4 to 6 ounces for the men’s relaxed fit and 3 to 5 ounces for the women’s relaxed fit.
On the high end, denim shirts and flannel shirts can weigh up to 11 ounces for men’s and 8 ounces for women’s sizes. Children’s shirts made from cotton typically weigh from 2 to 3 ounces and sizes from infant to 12 months may weigh even less. With such a wide range of weights, it is important for retailers to select the appropriate weight for their customers.
