BOARD GAME BASICS
Monopoly is one of the world’s most iconic board games and a favorite for family game nights. Everyone starts the game with the same amount of money, but how much is that?
THE BASICS
Monopoly is a real estate trading game where players buy, sell, and trade properties. Players compete against each other to accumulate wealth by buying properties, building houses and hotels, and collecting rent from other players. At the same time, they try to avoid going to jail, paying taxes, and getting crushed by unforeseen events such as bad mortgages or overdue utility bills.
HOW MUCH MONEY YOU START WITH
At the very beginning of the game, each player receives the same amount of money. In both the original and classic versions of the game, each player is given $1,500. This contains the following denominations:
2 x $500 bills
4 x $100 bills
1 x $50 bill
1 x $20 bill
2 x $10 bills
1 x $5 bill
5 x $1 bills
Monopoly Millionaire is a 2013 version of the game and contains different denominations of money with more million-dollar bills. Each player is given $1,000,000 with the following denominations:
2 x $500,000 bills
2 x $100,000 bills
2 x $50,000 bills
5 x $10,000 bills
5 x $5,000 bills
5 x $1,000 bills
5 x $500 bills
FINAL THOUGHTS
Since the game has been around for so long, many people think that Monopoly’s money hasn’t changed since it was first invented in 1935. However, the denominations have changed, and there are several versions of the game now with different amounts of money to start with. No matter which version you play, the goal is the same: become the wealthiest player and be the last one standing. Good luck and have fun!
