As of 2020, the Social Security Administration (SSA) provides substantial benefits to millions of Americans each year in the form of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI provides an additional financial support system to those who are eligible to receive it, such as older adults, disabled people, and those with limited income. As such, the amount of the benefit varies based on the individual’s financial situation and other factors.
The amount of SSI benefits to be provided in 2022 has not yet been determined, although it is expected to be indexed to account for inflation and other factors. It is important to note that SSI benefits can be increased in 2022 if the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) goes up. The COLA is an estimate of the rate of inflation that is determined by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Labor Statistics and is used to adjust benefit amounts in accordance with changing economic times.
The SSA will announce the COLA for 2022 at the end of 2021. Then, the SSA will use the index to determine the SSI benefit rate for the following year. Typically, COLA increases are announced in October of the preceding year and, if established, go into effect the following January.
In 2021, the amount of the maximum federal SSI amount for an individual is $794. In 2022, the amount could potentially go up if the COLA increases. For more information about the 2021 maximum SSI benefit amount and other related SSI topics, the SSA website provides the latest information and guidance.
