How old do you think I am? It is a question many of us have pondered over at some point in our lives. While being asked directly can seem like a large taboo, the question can come up in a series of other ways.
When you are in a group conversation and the conversation turns to age, limbs start to stiffen, and everyone frantically does their best to calculate the age of the others based on “clues” like hair, skin, facial features, mannerisms, and the like.
And, of course, conversations can also go in the other direction, and friends—old and new—often want to know more about each other, especially peers of a similar age. For example, when two young adults are together, each feels a tug to compare their lives and measure themselves against one another.
It’s difficult to answer the age question without seeming vain—even if you think you look far younger than your years. After all, what’s wrong with being born a certain age, other than being considered too young (or too old) for a certain situation?
When it comes to the age question, there’s no right or wrong answer—it’s about how you feel about your age. Instead of offering an answer, you can explain how you feel about it and how it is or isn’t a factor in why you’re doing something.
So, the next time someone asks you “How old do you think I am?”, rather than getting defensive or trying to keep your age a secret, simply explain that age is just a number and that you feel great about just being yourself.
