The Bratislava Castle is one of Slovakia’s most iconic landmarks, located in the old town of Bratislava, the country’s capital. Dating back almost a thousand years, the castle has been a witness to some of the most important moments in Slovakian history.
The castle is believed to have first been constructed in the 9th century. It was used as a fortification by Slavic tribes who first settled in the area known as Nitra. The first written record of the castle dates from the 10th century, and documents mention its use as a seat of power for the King of Hungary in the 12th century.
Throughout the centuries, the castle was extended and renovated several times. It reached its current baroque-style form in the 18th century, during the Hungarian Empire. After World War II, the castle was used as a university and as an administrative seat.
Today, the majestic Bratislava Castle stands proudly atop a hill overlooking the city. It offers breathtakingly scenic views of the Danube River, the Austrian city of Vienna, and the surrounding hills. The structure itself boasts a Gothic style, with a four-floored palace area and a Roman-style wall.
With centuries of history and plenty of attractions, the Bratislava Castle is one of the city’s most popular tourist spots. It is definitely worth visiting while in Slovakia, as it is a good way to learn about this small yet proud nation’s heritage.
