Tim Robbins is an American actor and director best known for his roles in The Shawshank Redemption, The Player, Bull Durham, and Mystic River, among many other films. He stands at a height of 6’5", making him one of the tallest leading men on the Hollywood scene.
Robbins was born in West Covina, California in 1958 and began acting while attending school at UCLA, making his first film appearance in 1979 in Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz. Throughout the 1980s, Robbins built his reputation as a powerful actor, gaining critical acclaim for his award-winning performances in films like The Right Stuff, Bull Durham, and Jacob’s Ladder.
In 1994, he was cast in the leading role in The Shawshank Redemption, arguably his most famous film. He has since gone on to star or direct in a slew of popular films and television series. His directorial debut, Bob Roberts, was nominated for an Academy Awards in 1992 for Best Original Screenplay.
Robbins is notorious for his towering height, at 6’5" making him one of the tallest leading men in Hollywood. His height and commanding presence have often made him a natural choice for roles requiring a larger-than-life presence, from prison wardens to presidents—many of which he has portrayed.
Given his height, Robbins has made some unusual cameos in music videos—most prominently in U2’s "Electrical Storm," directed by Kathryn Bigelow. There, he towers over the band as they appear below in the middle of a river, literally overshadowed by his massive presence.
Though many people might recognize Tim Robbins from his past comedic roles and his towering height, his impressive body of work has done a lot to shape the culture of American entertainment and cinema. His charisma and on-screen presence has earned him critical acclaim and has made him one of the most successful and recognizable actors in Hollywood today.
