Elvis Presley was one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century, and fans have long been curious as to how tall he was. Unfortunately, the only real account of Elvis’ stature comes from a medical examination he underwent while in the army in 1958. According to that record, Elvis was 5’ 11” tall, though some say he might have been a bit shorter.
Elvis was always considered to be a tall man. His height matched the average height of a white American male at the time (which was five feet, eleven inches). Elvis’ height was even more impressive given that he was a self-proclaimed “country boy” from a poor, rural area of the American South.
Elvis’ height, combined with his innate star quality and vocal talent, became an important part of his persona. His physical presence was a huge part of his live performances, particularly during the rock-and-roll revival of the 1950s. Presley was able to command the stage with his towering figure and heavily-rehearsed dance moves.
In the 60s and 70s, Presley’s iconic status had been firmly established and even his notable weight gain over the years did little to diminish his stature. Even during the latter years of his career, despite having fought off obesity, his height still remained at five-foot-eleven according to multiple sources.
In the end, Elvis Presley was a true jukebox legend who used his height to help create one of the biggest cultural icons of the 20th century. Even though his official height is unknown, most fans agree that he was tall and one of the greats.
