The garbage disposal in your kitchen sink can become a smelly and unsightly mess if left unchecked. With all the scraps and food waste that go down the disposal, you may find yourself with a stinky and unhygienic garbage disposal. To keep it smelling clean and working efficiently, regular maintenance and cleaning is key.
Fortunately, cleaning your garbage disposal is actually quite simple, and can be done in under five minutes. Here are a few tips on how to clean your garbage disposal and keep it smelling fresh and working smoothly:
Disconnect the power. Before you start cleaning your garbage disposal, it is important to turn off the power or unplug the unit in order to avoid any shocks or injuries.
Rinse the interior of the unit. Using a plumber’s tool or a long-handled brush, rinse and clean the interior of the garbage disposal to remove any lingering food particles. You can also fill the drain with hot water, and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.
Clear the sink drain. Often times, food particles can build up in the sink drain causing a clog. Use a bent wire hanger to carefully “fish” out any debris stuck inside the drain.
Refresh with ice. Fill up an ice cube tray with vinegar and freeze. Once the cubes are frozen, drop them down the disposal and turn it on. The ice will clean the blades and help deodorize the unit.
Use baking soda and vinegar. Make a paste of equal parts baking soda and vinegar, and gently scrub the inside of the garbage disposal unit. The mixture will help to freshen the unit, and will also help to remove any grease and grime.
Run the disposal. Finally, turn the power back on and run the disposal for a few seconds in order to flush out any lingering particles.
Following these simple steps will help your garbage disposal run smoothly and will keep it fresh and odor-free. With regular cleaning and maintenance, your garbage disposal will be able to work efficiently and reliably.
