Cleaning a microwave is a simple, but often overlooked, chore. While you may think your microwave needs to be scrubbed with harsh cleansers to look and smell clean, the truth is that a few simple steps will have your microwave smelling fresh and looking clean in no time.
Step 1: Prepare the Cleaning Solution
Mix together one part white vinegar and one part water in a microwave-safe bowl or cup. Place the bowl or cup in the microwave and turn it on for up to three minutes. The steam created from the hot solution will loosen any grime and stuck-on food in the microwave.
Step 2: Wipe Down the Microwave
Using a damp cloth, wipe the inside of the microwave and the turntable. Use the vinegar solution you created in the first step to help remove any stuck-on food and grime.
Step 3: Remove the Turntable
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing the turntable from the microwave. Once the turntable is removed, clean it with a damp cloth and the vinegar solution. Allow the turntable to dry before putting it back in the microwave.
Step 4: Clean the Vent Filter
The filter that is part of the ventilation system oftentimes accumulates dirt and dust. The filter will usually be located behind the top grille of the microwave. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific instructions on how to remove the filter. Soak the filter in the vinegar solution and then wipe it down. Allow the filter to dry completely before putting it back in the microwave.
Step 5: Clean the Microwave Exterior
You can easily give the exterior of the microwave a quick wipe down with a damp cloth to remove any smudges or sticky spots. You can also use a mild cleanser to really get the exterior of your microwave sparkling. However, make sure you rinse the exterior of the microwave with a damp cloth to remove any residue or residue that might remain.
Following these five steps will make sure that your microwave looks its best and is ready to use whenever you are. Taking the time to give your microwave these simple maintenance steps is well worth it and will reduce the amount of times you have to scrub and clean it.
