Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C) are two different scales used to measure temperature. While Fahrenheit is used primarily in the United States, Celsius is the metric scale used throughout most of the world. Knowing how to convert between these two different scales can be useful for when you’re working with recipes, traveling abroad and even interpreting weather reports.
To convert from Fahrenheit (°F) to Celsius (°C), begin by subtracting 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature. Then, divide the answer by 1.8 to get the degrees in Celsius.
For example, let’s say you want to convert 80°F to Celsius. The equation would be:
80°F – 32 = 48
48 / 1.8 = 26.67°C
Converting from Celsius to Fahrenheit is a bit different. To do so, start by multiplying the Celsius temperature by 1.8. Then, add 32 to the answer to find the Fahrenheit temperature.
Using the same example, let’s say you want to convert 26.67°C to Fahrenheit. The equation would be:
26.67°C x 1.8 = 48
48 + 32 = 80°F
So next time you come across a recipe or weather report in a different scale, you’ll be able to easily convert the temperatures between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
