Coffee Maker
Is your Keurig coffee maker not delivering the rich, flavorful coffee that it used to? If so, it may be time for a descaling – a process that removes the mineral buildup in the machine, returning it to its former glory. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to safely and effectively descale your Keurig coffee maker.
Prepare the Solution: Fill a clean container with 8 ounces of white vinegar and 8 ounces of cold water.
Soak Parts: Remove the lid, water reservoir and filter from your Keurig and soak them in the vinegar-water solution for 30-60 minutes. This will help dissolve away any mineral deposits.
Empty and Rinse: Empty the vinegar-water mixture from the container and discard it. Rinse the lid, reservoir and filter thoroughly with cold water to remove any residue.
Descale the Interior: Pour the vinegar-water solution into the water reservoir and then into the water chamber of your Keurig. Place a shallow bowl on the counter in front of your machine to catch the vinegar-water that runs out. Place a discount K-cup in the Keurig and start the cycle. This will force the mixture into the machine, dissolving any mineral buildup.
Rinse: After the cycle has finished, empty the vinegar-water solution from the water reservoir and discard it. Rinse the reservoir and fill it with cold, clean water. Reinstall the water reservoir and run a few clean water cycles to wash away any remaining vinegar taste from the machine.
Soak: After the last cycle is completed, fill the water chamber and reservoir with a mixture of one-part white vinegar and three-parts cold water. Place a shallow bowl on the counter in front of your machine to catch the vinegar-water that runs out. Run a few cycles to flush the machine, then wait an hour to soak.
Clean and Sanitize: After the last cycle is finished, rinse the water reservoir, lid and filter thoroughly with cold water to remove any residue. You may also want to sanitize the water reservoir by adding a few drops of chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide to the solution.
Reinstall: Once everything is clean and dry, reinstall the filer, lid and water reservoir and you’re ready to make coffee.
Your Keurig coffee maker is now back to delivering rich, flavorful coffee just as it did when it was new. Enjoy!
