Bananas are a popular and healthy fruit that many people enjoy adding to smoothies, baking, and more. Unfortunately, bananas can go from ripe to brown and overripe quite quickly, leaving you with an unappetizing snack. But instead of letting those extra bananas go to waste, why not freeze them for later use?
Freezing bananas is an easy and effective way to store them for an extended period of time. Whether you want to keep your bananas for smoothies, baking, or anything else, here’s how to freeze them the right way:
Start by selecting the ripest bananas you can find. Generally, the more yellow they are, the better they will freeze and thaw.
Peel and slice the bananas, then lay them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Try to space the pieces as far apart as possible to prevent them from sticking together.
Place the baking sheet in the freezer, and let the banana slices freeze until they’re solid, which should take several hours.
Once the banana slices are completely frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe container or bag. Make sure to press out any air to prevent freezer burn.
Label the container with the date and freeze for up to 6 months.
When you’re ready to use them, simply thaw the bananas in the fridge overnight, or leave them at room temperature for a few hours. Frozen bananas can also be added directly to a blender for smoothies, or microwaved for a few seconds to soften them up for baking.
Frozen bananas are a great way to store your excess fruit and make sure you never have to waste any of it. So next time you find yourself with extra ripe bananas, don’t throw them out – freeze them instead!
