Breakup blues are no fun, but getting over someone you truly cared about can be one of the toughest challenges you’ll ever face. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to make the process of moving on a bit easier.
When you’re going through a breakup, it’s easy to try to squash your emotions and move on as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this isn’t helpful in the long run. Allow yourself to feel the whole range of emotions, whether it’s sorrow, regret, anger, disappointment, or relief. Try to recognize that these feelings are part of the process of healing and move through them one by one.
Sometimes, putting your feelings on paper can be an effective way of getting them out. Write a letter to the person, if it helps. Feel free to use whatever words come to you, even if they’re harsh or angry. The point is to get your true feelings out, not to actually send the letter.
Focus on taking care of yourself. Exercise, eat healthy meals, sleep, and try to find enjoyable activities that you can use to take your mind off things. Whatever you enjoyed before the relationship, like listening to music, reading, writing, doing yoga, playing a sport, or taking a class, try doing it more often.
In times of distress, friends and family can provide emotional support. Spend time with them and talk about your feelings, or just go out and have some fun. It can often help to talk to someone who’s been in a similar situation, so don’t be afraid to seek advice.
To get over someone, it’s important to give yourself time to process the emotions associated with the breakup. Drinking too much may temporarily take the edge off but it won’t help in the long run. It’s best to avoid any substance that can reduce inhibitions and interfere with processing your emotions.
Focus on personal and professional development. Make plans for the future and start taking the steps necessary to reach your goals. This is a great way to stay positive and look forward to a brighter future.
When you’re feeling ready, try dating someone new. This doesn’t mean you should jump into a new relationship right away. Just go out with people, get to know them, and enjoy casual dates. If it doesn’t feel right, that’s okay. Just keep trying and keep an open mind.
Getting over someone isn’t easy, but it is possible. It may take some time but be patient with yourself and take one day at a time. Soon enough, you’ll be ready to move on.
