If you’re not sure how old your eggs are or if they’re safe to eat, there are a few tests you can perform to figure out whether or not they’re still edible.
The best way to know if eggs are still safe to eat is to check the expiration date that’s printed on the carton. Generally, the expiration date is found on the end of the box and it’s usually in the format of a month and year. For example, if the date reads “03/17,” then the eggs should still be safe to consume during that month of March in the year 2017.
If the printed date has passed, then you should discard the eggs as they’re more likely not safe to eat.
If the eggs are past the printed date on the carton, you can perform a sniff test to confirm whether they’re still safe to consume. Grab an egg and gently give it a sniff from one end. If the egg smells like rotten eggs or sulfur, then it’s best to discard the egg and replace it with a fresh batch.
If the eggs pass the expiration date and sniff test, then you may want to perform a float test to check their safety level. Place the eggs in a large bowl of cold water. If the egg sinks to the bottom, then it’s still good to eat. However, if the egg floats to the surface, then it’s a red flag that the egg has gone bad and should not be consumed.
By following these simple tests, you can easily determine if your eggs are still safe to eat. If they fail any of the tests, it’s best to discard them and buy a fresh batch.
