Not only is it fun to make, but homemade soap can be customized with different fragrances, natural colorants, and even different shapes to best suit your needs. If you’ve ever been tempted to try your hand at it, here’s how to make soap.
Ingredients & Supplies
Making soap requires a few special ingredients and materials. In addition to your soap base, you’ll need an array of items for coloring, scenting, and shaping your soap. Here’s what you’ll need:
-Soap base: Choose a melt-and-pour soap base, which is pre-made and requires no additional ingredients to be added. Popular soap bases include those made with shea butter, goat’s milk, and aloe vera.
-Fragrance oils: You can use essential or fragrance oils in liquid or powder form to give your soap a pleasant smell.
-Coloring: Natural colorants such as pink clay, activated charcoal, and madder root powder can be used for color. or you can opt for commercial soap coloring.
-Molds: Soap molds come in many shapes and sizes. You can also use muffin pans, ice cube trays, or other containers to make different shapes.
-Glycerin: Glycerin helps give your soap greater moisturizing effects.
Instructions
Start with your soap base. The base should always be cut into small cubes for easy melting. Place the cubes in a microwavable-safe dish and microwave them in 30-second intervals until they are completely melted.
Add your favorite fragrance oils and stir the mixture to combine.
Pour the melted soap mixture into your molds. If you want to add color, you can add a few drops of natural colorants or soap colorants. For an extra moisturizing effect, add a teaspoon of glycerin.
Allow the soap to cool and set for 3-4 hours.
When it’s ready, take the soap out of the molds and voila! You have homemade soap.
Once you get the gist of it, soap making is an easy and fun process! Experiment with different colorants and fragrances for endless customization options.
