Rice is a staple food in many cultures around the world. White rice is arguably one of the most popular and widely-consumed grains in the world. It can be served on its own or use as an ingredient in many dishes. Here is how to make white rice on the stove or in a rice cooker.
Stove-top Method:
Measure the amount of rice you need to make, usually one cup of uncooked rice, per four servings. Wash the rice in several changes of water in a pot or bowl using your hands, until the water is mostly clear. After washing, drain the rice entirely in a colander.
Put the washed and drained rice in the pot or large saucepan. For every one cup of dry rice, add one and a half cups of water. Bring the water and rice to a boil over medium-high heat.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender. Make sure to stir the rice periodically during cooking.
Remove the pot from the heat and let the rice rest for five minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
Rice Cooker Method:
Measure the amount of rice you need to make. Wash the rice in several changes of water in a bowl or a pot with your hands, until the water is mostly clear. After washing, drain the rice entirely in a colander and transfer it to the rice cooker bowl.
For every one cup of dry rice, add one and a half cups of water. Place the lid on the rice cooker, select the "white rice" setting, and start the cooker.
Allow the rice to cook until the cooker turns off. After rice is cooked, let it rest for five minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
Making white rice is a straightforward process. All you need is the ingredients, a pot or a rice cooker, and about 20 minutes of your time. Enjoy as a side dish or in cooked dishes with your favorite meat or vegetables.
