Pronouncing Oaxaca can be a tricky task. Oaxaca, in full Estado Libre y Soberano de Oaxaca or the Free and Sovereign State of Oaxaca, is a state in south westgerman Mexico. It shares the border with Guerrero to the west, Puebla to the northwest, Veracruz to the north, and Chiapas to the east.
Depending on where you come from, and what dialect you speak, there may be a variety of ways to pronounce Oaxaca. Generally speaking, the more native Spanish speaker will pronounce it as:
WAH-hah-kah
The emphasis is quite firmly on the second syllable, but it is still softer than stressing the syllable itself: WAH-HAH-KAH.
In Mexico, Oaxaca is more commonly pronounced:
Wa-HAH-ka
This pronunciation places more emphasis on the first syllable and softens the endings.
In the U.S. and other English-speaking countries, the pronunciation is slightly different:
WAH-uh-kuh
This pronunciation is quite much like the first one above, but with a slight emphasis on the third syllable.
No matter which pronunciation you use, Oaxaca remains a beautiful place filled with interesting culture and history. So don’t be too concerned if you aren’t saying it just right!
