Nobody likes being stuffed up, but it can be a common symptom of the common cold or seasonal allergies. A stuffy nose can make breathing difficult and make sleeping a challenge. If your nose is stuffed up, there are several things you can do to give yourself some relief.
1) Use a Saline Solution: Saline solutions are an easy, quick way to unstuff your nose. You can buy pre-mixed saline solutions or mix one yourself. Simply mix a quarter teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water. Then, use a neti pot or nasal syringe to irrigate your nostrils with the mixture.
2) Try Hot Compresses: Hot compresses can be helpful for a stuffy nose. Simply soak a towel in hot (not scalding) water, wring it out, and then press it against your face. Or, you can use a warm compress specifically designed for the nose, such as a nasal compress.
3) Use a Humidifier: Humidifiers add moisture to the air, which can help to relieve congestion. When the air has less moisture, mucous membranes become dry and inflamed, which keeps your nose stuffed up. Consider using a cool mist humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep.
4) Take a Hot Shower: Hot showers can help to unplug stuffy noses. The steam helps to thin the mucus and reduce inflammation. When taking a shower, you can also use a menthol shower bomb to further help clear your sinuses.
5) Drink Plenty of Fluids: Stuffy noses can be a result of dehydration. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day can help keep your body hydrated and help relieve congestion.
6) Use an Over-the-Counter Decongestant: Over-the-counter decongestants can be a fast fix for a stuffy nose. These medications work to reduce swelling and constrict blood vessels to relieve congestion. However, decongestants should be used sparingly and only when needed.
7) Try a Menthol Lozenge: Menthol lozenges can also help to unplug stuffy noses. Simply suck on the lozenge and it will release menthol vapors that help to open the nasal passages.
No one likes having a stuffy nose, but there are effective ways to unplug it. From using a saline rinse to taking a hot shower, there are several options that can help to give you relief and get you feeling better.
