Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, is a Chinese-American actress and singer who plays the title role in Disney’s 2020 live-action adaptation of Mulan. She has become a major talking point in the entertainment industry and faces the difficult task of portraying an iconic character who has been around since 1998.
Liu was born in Wuhan, China in 1987 to an executive father and a French teacher mother. She was educated in Beijing and attended the Beijing Film Academy where she graduated with a degree in Performance.
Liu began her entertainment career as a model when she was just 11 years old. Later, she formed the girl group “Snow[Fei]” which gained the attention of talent agents. She made her acting debut in 2004 in The Return of the Condor Heroes, a Chinese television series based on the popular novel by Jinyong.
In 2008, Liu made her Hollywood debut in The Forbidden Kingdom, starring martial arts legends Jackie Chan and Jet Li. She then moved on to land her biggest role to date in the action-romantic drama titled Outcast (2014). This movie put Liu in a coveted position to be considered for the title role of Mulan.
To prepare for the role, Liu worked hard studying the material, including all the songs from the animated movie. She took horseback riding and martial arts lessons for months and even did her own stunts. Finally, after a lengthy and difficult audition process, Liu was chosen to be the titular character in Disney’s Mulan.
The Mulan remake offered Liu the opportunity to explore her acting ability and dig deeper into her own culture, as the movie is full of Chinese culture, language, and traditions. The immense responsibility of playing the iconic titular character did not go unnoticed as Liu won the Breakthrough Entertainer Award at the 2020 Hollywood Film Awards.
