The lighthearted 2003 children’s fantasy film Mostly Ghostly Who Let the Ghosts Out follows preteen Max Doyle as he attempts to save the world from a powerful but bumbling sorcerer who’s unleashed a hoard of mischievous ghosts. Written and directed by Rich Correll, the movie stars Jamie Kennedy in the lead role alongside a cast of mostly unknowns.
The story opens with a brief history of mostly ghostly ghosts, their mysterious origins lost in the mists of time. Max is a 12-year-old misfit who’s constantly picked on by school bullies and overlooked by his busy parents. One night, Max is drawn to an empty house on his street and is startled to discover two peculiar ghosts – Nicky and Tara – trapped inside. Much to his shock, Max learns that he has the power to see and communicate with ghosts, a gift that Nicky and Tara desperately need in order to break their curse and return to spectral form.
With help from his best friend, Max sets out to locate the ancient book of spells they need in order to vanquish Lord Arcanum, the evil sorcerer responsible for trapping Nicky and Tara. Along the way, they battle Arcanum’s mischievous ghostly minions, dodge magical traps, and attempt to unlock the secret of the mysterious book.
Filled with colorful characters, thrilling action scenes, and funny moments, Mostly Ghostly Who Let the Ghosts Out is a delightful family movie that both kids and adults will find enjoyable. It features solid performances from Kennedy, as well as the rest of the cast, and the effects are impressive for its low budget. With its positive message about friendship and teamwork, this film is sure to be a hit with viewers of all ages.
