We all have days when our mood changes and it can be hard to communicate how we really feel. So the next time someone asks you “how are you feeling today?” you can respond with “on a scale from 1 to 10, today I’m a ___.” Because usually we can’t express our feelings accurately with words, the scale from 1 to 10 provides a fast and efficient way to communicate our current emotional state.
One represents feeling so low, you don’t feel like getting out of bed, or can’t focus on anything else, while 10 means you feel the best you’ve ever felt. Wherever your feelings are on the scale, it’s important to remember all the emotions in between. It might be helpful to also think of different situations you experienced during the day. Good emotions can be rated higher than bad emotions, and these can help you determine where you are on the scale.
For instance, if you had a difficult conversation with someone close to you that made you feel 5 out of 10, but a great meeting with your boss that made you feel 8 out of 10, the latter may be a higher rating.
Truthfully, it’s okay to have days where your number isn’t that high — this is a normal part of being human. But understanding where you are on the scale of 1-10 will enable you to better express yourself to others. It’s also important to remember your feelings may change throughout the day, and you should take the time to tune into yourself, and figure out where your current emotional state stands.
