The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band that has been a major influence in the music industry ever since they had their first international hit in 1970 with “American Woman.” They had many more hits in the 1970s and early 1980s, and “These Eyes” was no exception.
The group was formed in 1965 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and consisted of vocalist/guitarist Burton Cummings, guitarist Randy Bachman, bassist Jim Kale, keyboardist/guitarist Chad Allan and drummer/vocalist Garry Peterson. “These Eyes” was written by Bachman and Cummings and recorded at Sound Stage Studios in Toronto.
The song itself reached the top of the charts in the US and Canada and it peaked at number three in the UK. With its catchy melodies and memorable chorus, “These Eyes” is sure to make any listener’s heart melt. The lyrics detail a man’s heartache as he longs to be reunited with his lost love. He remembers her fondly, vowing there will never be another woman like her.
The song is an example of The Guess Who’s ability to craft timeless music that still resonates with people today. They have been cited by such acts such as Aerosmith and Guns N’ Roses as an influence and helped to kickstart – and popularize – the hard rock sound of the 1970s.
The Guess Who are inductees into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have been featured on Canada’s Walk of Fame. It’s safe to say that The Guess Who’s greatest hit, “These Eyes,” has played a large part in their success and will remain an integral part of the group’s legacy for many years to come.
