The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, a new indie comedy from director-writer duo Joe and Emmy Walken, is sure to leave audiences laughing and singing all the way home to their favorite tunes.
Set in a small town in the southeastern United States, the story follows Nathan, a jaded yet lovable young man who has severe distaste for anything musical. He quibbles at his family’s songs and rejects the local theater’s season passes despite his parents’ nagging. To him, musicals are silly and a waste of time.
But one day Nathan meets a boy his age, Roderick, who loves music and musicals more than anything in the world. Through a fateful meeting at a local carni, he finds himself dragged into unusual performance classes and finally, the theater. He must choose between following his heart and staying true to his skeptical nature.
The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals features an all-star cast including Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville) as Nathan, former Disney star Raven Goodwin as his love interest, Penelope, and Jordin Sparks (American Idol) as Roderick’s Broadway-bound friend, Pearl. Ryan McCombs of the rock band SOiL plays Roderick’s uncle, and John Ratzenberger (Cheers) delivers a hilarious turn as an old-time theater director.
The movie delivers an uplifting, melodious experience, filled with feel-good moments, top-notch performances, witty dialogues and beautiful music. Director Joe Walken delicately balances the humor and drama of the story; capturing how a simple relationship transforms two people in unexpected ways.
It’s an enjoyable ride for the young and the young-at-heart, full of unlikely friendships, coming-of-age mishaps, and ultimately a celebration of tolerance and acceptance.
The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals is sure to win over any skeptic.
