Blue eyes are an iconic part of the pop group The Who. The Who have had their fair share of hits, however none have been as popular or as memorable as the 1975 release, “Behind Blue Eyes”. Written and sung by Roger Daltrey, this classic anthem is regarded as the band’s best ballad.
This beautiful ballad is a narrative view of the struggles of youth. It tells the story of someone who has been wrongfully accused of being a troublemaker and is constantly judged despite their own good intentions. The song features somber music in a minor key and delicate yet powerful guitar work by Pete Townshend. Daltrey’s soulful vocals blend perfectly with Townshend’s signature guitar licks to create the perfect backdrop for the song’s lyrics. Despite its somber lyrics, the song still has an uplifting message at the heart of it.
“Behind Blue Eyes” not only encapsulated The Who’s sound at the time but also presented a less-common emotion as a main character. It captures the struggle of someone who is constantly judged by society and facing external obstacles that can’t be helped, but at the same time still has the hope of achieving inner peace.
Some of the success of “Behind Blue Eyes” can also be linked to the cover versions that have been released over the years. An acoustic version by the band Limp Bizkit, a nu metal remake by A Perfect Circle, and a down-tempo reggae version by UB40 have all charted all over the world.
Often considered as one of the most iconic songs of the band’s career, “Behind Blue Eyes” has continued to stand the test of time. Its heartbreaking lyrics and passionate performance by The Who will continue to move people, regardless of generation.
