Most people who are familiar with the 1975 British slapstick comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail know the scene in which King Arthur meets the Knights Who Say Ni. In the scene, the Knights demand an offering of shrubbery and demand the King prove himself a Knight by changing his name, refusing to abate until they are satisfied.
However, while the name change which King Arthur performs is well-known, many don’t realize that the Knights Who Say Ni have changed their own names as well. After King Arthur successfully changes his name to Lancelot, the head Knight utters the words “we are now the Knights Who Say…Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-PTANG. Zoom-Boing. Z’nourrwringmm”, thus officially changing their group’s name.
The Knights Who Say Ni were not the only characters to experience name changes in the movie. In another scene, King Arthur meets the Knights of the Round Table who were originally named the Knights of Ni, but wound up renaming themselves. In the scene, after King Arthur requests entrance to their castle, a Knight exclaims “Oh! No, we already are the ‘Knights Who Say Ni!’” and then announces to the others the new name of their group, the Knights of the Round Table.
The Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie certainly has a large number of memorable scenes and moments, with many of them staring the Knights Who Say Ni and their ongoing name changes. It certainly acted as a launching point for the hilarious dialogue, one-liners, and jokes for which the movie has become so famous.
